What's a widget you ask? A widget is a blog add-on to enhance an aspect of it's functionality. For example, if you record audios you would like to share on your blog, there are widgets to make it easy for you to upload your audio and create a player.

Upgrading an Old WordPress Blog
WordPress is constantly evolving. Because it's dynamically displayed by reading from a database and written on the fly to web pages using PHP [a coding language], it more susceptible to bad guys attempting to run malicious scripts, or hacking as it's called, your site. For this reason, if you have an older version of WordPress, it is very important to upgrade it as soon as possible. Newer versions incorporate many new security enhancements in addition to more 'bells and whistles'.
Older versions are more technically challenging to upgrade for less advanced web owners, because the upgrade is done 'manually' using FTP and many precautions must be taken to guard against something going wrong. It's just too technical for lots of web site owners, so often upgrades get put off.
